One person is currently receiving treatment following a serious collision involving two motorcycles on the Hulhumalé Highway.

Maldives Police Service told the media that the accident was reported at approximately 21:13pm on Friday night. The Police confirmed that the rider of one of the motorcycles sustained injuries and is currently receiving treatment at the hospital.

The accident is under further investigation.

The growing number of serious accidents reported on the Sinamalé Bridge and highway has raised increasing public concern over road safety.

The main factors contributing to these accidents include speeding, illegal overtaking, and distracted driving, including the use of mobile phones while driving. Adverse weather conditions, particularly rain and slippery roads, can further increase the risk of accidents.

In response to these concerns, the Maldives Police Service and other relevant authorities are implementing a range of measures. These include traffic management initiatives involving increased patrols, the establishment of checkpoints to detect traffic violations, and the use of speed cameras and speed guns to monitor and regulate vehicle speeds.

Authorities are also working to strengthen and enforce traffic regulations, while conducting public awareness campaigns aimed at promoting greater road safety.
