Yellow alert issued as heavy rain floods Male’, affecting multiple homes

Multiple homes in Male’ City were affected on Saturday, as heavy rain caused extensive flooding in the Maldivian capital.

The flooding came amid a yellow alert in place for central Maldives. The Maldives Meteorological Service expects the area from K. Atoll to ADh. Atoll to be affected by torrential rain and thunderstorms with gusts of 45 miles per hour until at least 11:30 am.

The Meteorological Service forecasts fairly widespread rain with occasional heavy showers and thunderstorms across the country on Saturday.

The weather agency also forecasts north/north westerly winds of 13 – 23 miles per hour, with gusts of 40 miles per hour during showers.

Seas are expected to be rough with waves of 3 – 7 feet.

In the capital, Male’ City, heavy rain caused extensive flooding, prompting the Maldives National Defense Force (MNDF) to launch an operation to assist affected homes and engage in dewatering efforts.

The bad weather comes amid the school mid-term break – a period marked by an increase in travel.
