Ten recipients honoured at inaugural Engineers Award 2026 ceremony

The newly introduced Engineers Award 2026 was presented to 10 recipients on Thursday evening, in recognition of the hard work of Maldivian engineers and professionals contributing to national development. The awards were conferred at the first-ever national engineering awards ceremony, presided over by President Dr Mohamed Muizzu at Barcelo Nasandhura.

Dr Furqan Ibrahim of MWSC received two honours: the Engineer of the Year Award and the Engineering Innovation, Technology, Education & Research Award.

In addition, Mohamed Zidhan Hassan received the Young Engineer Award, while Asrar, the Maldives’ first female Chartered Civil Engineer and a Grade 1 licensed engineer working at the Ministry of Infrastructure, received the Women in Engineering Award.

A civil and structural engineer, and a project manager, with more than 15 years of experience. Asrar is Grade 1 licensed and the Maldives’ first woman Chartered Civil Engineer.

The Student Innovator Award was presented to Hussain Jaushan, a Maldivian student studying in Malaysia.

Three individuals who made long-standing contributions to the profession were honoured with Lifetime Achievement Awards:

• Abdul Shakoor Solih, former Managing Director of STELCO, recognised for nearly 50 years of service to the electricity sector.  

• The late Ahmed Mahureen, honoured for more than 40 years of service in aviation and engineering. The award was accepted by his daughter, Farmad Shannam.  

• The late Mohamed Rasheed, former Chairman and CEO of STELCO, recognised for over 50 years of service to the electricity sector. The award was accepted by his son, Ibrahim Ibtisham.

Among the project-based awards, the Sustainability Champion Award went to MWSC for its decarbonized seawater desalination system, which pairs solar power with NAS battery storage to produce clean water without carbon emissions.

MWSC also received the Community Impact Award for its Integrated Utility Services Project in R. Dhuvaafaru, which delivers essential services through a seamlessly designed, all-in-one system for the island.
