87 more register for single parent allowance

87 additional individuals registered with the National Social Protection Agency (NSPA) in August as single parents in order to obtain financial aid from the state.

Monthly statistics released by NSPA shows that with the newly registered single parents, the state is now paying the monthly allowance for 179 additional children.

The single parent allowance is a financial aid program launched by the state to support low-income single parents.

The statistics show 3,357 single parents were enrolled in the program as of the end of August, supporting 5,206 children.

NSPA disbursed MVR 17,469,000 in aid to single parents in August alone.

Under new regulations enacted in January, single parents receive a monthly allowance of MVR 3,000 per child for up to four children, and an additional MVR 1,000 for each additional child, with the aid capped at MVR 15,000 per family.

Single parents previously received MVR 2,000 per child for up to four children and an additional MVR 1,000 for each additional child, with the aid capped at MVR 10,000 per family.

Single parents are only eligible for the aid if their income falls below the designated poverty line, and if their children are vaccinated and enrolled in schools.

Children enrolled in the state disability allowance program are also ineligible.
