Warm Independence Day greetings as President underscores enduring Maldives-Malaysia ties

The relationship between Maldives and Malaysia is based on common principles and mutual respect, President Dr Mohamed Muizzu said.

In a post shared on social media on the occasion of Malaysia’s Independence Day, the President said he had sent separate letters to His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim and Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim. He conveyed good wishes for the leaders’ health and for sustained peace and prosperity for the people of Malaysia.

In his letter to King Sultan Ibrahim, the President noted that the two countries have enjoyed a strong relationship over the past five decades, grounded in friendship, mutual respect and cooperation.

“Maldives and Malaysia’s relationship is based on common beliefs and respect,” he said in the post.

He assured that he would continue to strengthen this friendly relationship for the benefit of the people of both countries.

In his letter to Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, the President said that regular high-level engagements and strong people-to-people ties have facilitated economic growth and strengthened cooperation in key areas.

He said the relationship would continue to expand economic engagement between the two countries and create more opportunities for both peoples.

Malaysia gained independence from the British on August 31, 1957. Diplomatic relations between Maldives and Malaysia were established in 1968.

Malaysia has long maintained close ties with Maldives, with many Maldivians travelling there for higher education and holidays.
