Phase II accident leaves child in ICU as police withhold two cars for probe

The nine-year-old girl who was injured in the deadly accident near the Vinares Flats in Hulhumale' second phase on Saturday night remains in critical condition and is being treated on a ventilator in the ICU at IGMH.

An IGMH spokesperson told Sun that the child is currently on ventilator support in the ICU, and that it is difficult to comment on her condition at this stage.

The injured child was first taken to Hulhumale' Hospital at around 9:00 pm. As her condition deteriorated, she was transferred to IGMH for further treatment.

The accident occurred when a man was struck by the motorcycle carrying the child as he walked along the side of the road to board a parked car near Vinares 7, Hithigas Magu, Hulhumale Phase II.

The victim’s 18-year-old aunt was driving the motorcycle. She was also treated at the hospital for multiple injuries.

The child fell onto the road and sustained serious head injuries. Eyewitnesses said she appeared unconscious after the fall and was bleeding heavily from her head.

However, it remains unclear whether the child’s injuries were caused by impact with the car or from falling onto the road.

A police spokesperson said two cars have been towed to collect evidence required for the investigation.

Police continue to investigate the incident.
