The Maldives Meteorological Service issued a yellow weather alert for northern Maldives on Sunday, warning of torrential rain and thunderstorms.

The yellow alert is in effect until at least 07:00 pm.

Torrential rain caused extensive flooding in HDh. Nolhivaram on Sunday, with the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) confirming that at least three homes have reported flood damage.

According to the NDMA, it has been raining non-stop over Nolhivaram since 11:30 am.

The local council is working on dewatering flooded areas, added the NDMA.

There’s also a separate nationwide white alert in place for until at least 08:00 pm, with the national weather agency forecasting heavy rain and thunderstorms with gusts of 35 miles per hour across the country.

The Maldives has been experiencing widespread rain since last weekend, resulting in flooding and extensive damage to homes, businesses and key state institutions in several islands.

The Maldives Meteorological Service, in a statement on Saturday, attributed the bad weather to an active Southwest Monsoon, locally known as the Hulhangu Monsoon.

The agency warned that some islands may experience periods of torrential rain with the possibility of localized flooding through Wednesday.
