MTCC says flooding on ring road due to ongoing pump-station works

The Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) says the flooding observed in the newly developed section of Boduthakurufaanu Magu is due to pump-station works that have not yet been completed.

The stretch of road between the President’s Office and the Hulhumale' ferry terminal was upgraded to modern standards and opened for public use last Friday. However, videos shared on social media during the ongoing southwest monsoon showed rainwater accumulating in the area.

In a statement, MTCC said it had already informed the public that certain works were still ongoing when the road was opened to traffic. The company noted that three pump stations planned for the upgraded section are still under installation.

MTCC said the pump stations will be installed, tested and commissioned before August 15, adding that temporary drainage measures will continue until the system is fully operational.

The company also stated that it will continue to drain accumulated water whenever heavy monsoon rainfall causes flooding in the area.

The road-widening and development project began in August last year. MTCC was awarded the contract, including installation of the drainage system, for MVR 144 million.
