Police recover MVR 10K stolen from expat, arrest two

The police have successfully recovered stolen money from two people suspected of mugging an expatriate worker as he was driving a bicycle along a street in Hulhumale’.

According to a statement released by the police on Thursday, the mugging took place near the FW Residence in Hulhumale’ Phase I, and was reported to the police at around 11:25 pm July 26.

It involved two people on a motorcycle who targeted an expatriate on a bicycle, and stole a wallet containing MVR 10,000 in cash.

The police said that the Hulhumale’ Response and Patrol Unit and Investigation Unit launched immediate efforts to identify the muggers, going through CCTV footage.

At around 12:30 am July 27, the police seized the motorcycle used in the crime and arrested the first of the suspects; Ijaz Naseer, 40, Athamaage, GDh. Vaadhoo.

Ijaz was remanded in custody of the police for 10 days when presented before a judge for his remand hearing.

According to police, the second suspect, whose identity was not disclosed, was arrested on July 29, and later released from police custody.

The police did not explain the reason for the decision.

The police said they also recovered the wallet and the MVR 10,000 stolen from the victim.

The case is under further investigation by the police.
