Man imprisoned for mugging and pushing woman down stairs at Male’ gym

A man from M. Naalaafushi was sentenced to prison on Wednesday, after he was found guilty of mugging and pushing a woman down a flight of stairs as she exited a gym in Male’.

Moosa Nafiu of Banafsaage in M. Naalaafushi was prosecuted over a violent mugging that took place at around 08:15 pm on April 4 at a gym in Fareedhee Magu, resulting in injuries to a woman.

According to the prosecution, he snatched the woman’s mobile phone and a silver necklace off her neck before pushing her down the stairs.

He was pressed with three charges; illegal possession, infliction of bodily harm and damage to property.

He pled guilty to all three charges in exchange for leniency in sentencing.

On Wednesday, the Criminal Court sentenced him to four months and 24 days for illegal possession, 27 days for bodily harm, and six days for property damage.

During sentencing, the judge noted that Nafiu had a prior conviction earlier this year for illegal possession. However, he was given a lessor sentence based on his guilty plea and cooperation in expediting the case.
