Kandoodhoo chili prices soar to MVR 370 per kilo

The price of chilis produced in Th. Kandoodhoo, a staple in Maldivian cuisine, has shot up to MVR 370 per kilo in the Male’ market.

Mohamed Arif, a vendor from Kandoodhoo, told Sun on Friday that the price has been above MVR 300 for the last three weeks.

He attributes the sharp rise in price to a shortage due to the hot weather.

Kandoodhoo chili is usually available for MVR 120 per kilo. But the price has now risen to MVR 320 to MVR 370 per kilo.

Looking at other produce, the price of Maldivian cucumbers has shot up from MVR 35 to MVR 75 per kilo.

Indian melons, a popular fruit especially in Ramadan, are available for MVR 35 per kilo.

Meanwhile, passion fruits are available for MVR 80 per kilo, smoked tuna is available for MVR 125 per kilo, pumpkin for MVR 25 per kilo, banana for MVR 35 to MVR 40 per kilo, and coconuts for MVR 8 to 10.

Carrots are available for MVR 40 per kilo, lime for MVR 35 per kilo, collard greens (kopy faiy) and curry leaves (hikandhi faiy) for MVR 10 per bundle, and pandan leaves for MVR 5.
