State Trading Organization (STO) on Tuesday said onions remain available as usual and will begin wholesale sales next week.

The clarification comes amid social media reports claiming shortages and higher prices in the market.

STO said it still has onions in stock at the previous price of MVR 13 per kilo.

The company added that wholesale sales will begin next week, and arrangements are being made to supply onions to STO’s regional outlets as well.

STO onions are sold at MVR 13 per kilo, while shops typically sell them at MVR 16 to 18 per kilo. However, two weeks ago, retail prices in Male' had spiked to MVR 30 to 35 per kilo.
