Police mark Memorial Day in honor of officers who died in line of duty

Officers gathered on Thursday to commemorate Police Memorial Day to honor and mourn police officers who died in the line of duty.

This year’s commemorations began at midnight, with the police flag lowered to half-mast.

A ceremony was held at 06:00 am, during which the police held a moment of silence, made dua, held a mounting ceremony at the Memorial Wall.

Officers will be holding vigil at the Memorial Wall until midnight.

The ceremony was attended by Homeland Security Minister Ali Ihusan, Commissioner of Police Ahmed Mohamed, and other senior police officials.

The Memorial Wall has the names of five officers who died in the line of duty; Sergeant Ali Nazim, Sergeant Adam Haleem, Sergeant Misbah Abdulla, Segreant Ahmed Wifaq, and Constable Yoosuf Zameer.

The police also honored the memories of 11 more police officers who lost their lives in the line of duty; Superintendent of Police Ismail Nadheem, Police Sergeant Hussain Shareef, Police Sergeant Shujau Adnan, Police Sergeant Ismail Riza, Police Corporal Mohamed Shathir, Police Lance Corporal Hassan Ashraf, Constable Abdul Basith, Sergeant Fathimath Rifa, Constable Hussain Gais, Sergeant Mohamed Arshad, and Sub-Inspector of Police Ahmed Asif, the latter of whom died on June 11 during an operation at sea.

The Police Memorial Day has been marked annually on July 23 since 2013, in honor of Sergeant Adam Haleem, who died in the line of duty in K. Kaashidhoo on July 23, 2012.
