Fire at WAMCO’s Thilafushi area disrupts waste services in Male' region

The Waste Management Corporation (WAMCO) has announced that waste acceptance in Male’ City has been reduced following a fire at the waste management site in K. Thilafushi.

A fire broke out in the WAMCO area of Thilafushi on Sunday night and was extinguished on Monday morning.

In a statement on Wednesday, the company said parts of the site have been closed due to the fire, disrupting day-to-day services.

WAMCO noted that operations at the transfer facilities in Male’, Vilimale’ and Hulhumale’ have also been affected. As a result, the company has been forced to reduce the amount of waste received from these facilities.

The company added that it is working continuously to restore normal operations at the Thilafushi site.

WAMCO apologised for any inconvenience caused during the restoration period and said it is working to find a quick solution to the difficulties faced by the public.

More than 200,000 people live in the Male’ region, and large volumes of waste are transported to Thilafushi daily. According to 2022 statistics, 1,200 tonnes of waste are transported from the Male’ area to Thilafushi every day.
