Two Bangladeshi nationals have been arrested in Male’ City on suspicion of illegally possessing, using and dealing in liquor.
Police identified the suspects as 21-year-old MD Siam Ahmed and 35-year-old Robel Miah. They were taken into custody following a tip-off that the pair were involved in distributing liquor in the capital.
Counter Narcotics Intelligence and Drug Enforcement officers searched the apartment where the suspects were staying and recovered 12 bottles of liquor during Saturday’s operation, police said.
The two men have since been handed over to Maldives Immigration for action under the Immigration Act.
Police said the case is under further investigation.
Arrests of expatriates over liquor trafficking have become increasingly common in recent months, with a significant number of cases involving Bangladeshi nationals.
