President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has returned to Malé after concluding his official visit to the Qatar.
The visit was undertaken to offer condolences to His Highness Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, Amir of the State of Qatar, and the Royal Family following the passing of his father, His Highness Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, former Amir of the State of Qatar, on Sunday.
During the visit, President Dr Muizzu was received in audience by the Amir of Qatar, where he conveyed condolences on behalf of the Government and the people of the Maldives. The two leaders also reaffirmed their shared commitment to further strengthening bilateral cooperation between the two countries.
The President's visit reflects the importance the Maldives places on its longstanding and close relations with the State of Qatar.
The late former Amir made significant contributions to the Maldives, including facilitating the launch of Qatar Airways operations in the country and supporting the establishment of Hamad Bin Khalifa Al Thani School in Laamu Atoll and Masjid al Sheikh Qasim bin Al Thani in Hulhumalé. Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani paid an official visit to the Maldives in 2005.
Diplomatic relations between the Maldives and the State of Qatar were established on May 26th 1984. Since then, Qatar has played a significant role in supporting the Maldives' development and the well-being of its people.
Qatar experienced significant economic, social, and cultural development, strengthening its standing within the international community during Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani’s reign.
He also oversaw major economic investments and expanded the country's international partnerships, while guiding Qatar's emergence as the world's largest exporter of liquefied natural gas. Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani was also the driving force behind one of the world’s biggest media outlets, ‘Al Jazeera’.
