The defense counsel for a man accused of smuggling drugs into the Maldives has requested a psychological evaluation, stating that the suspect is autistic and has been undergoing treatment since childhood.

The suspect in the case is a 27-year-old man from an island in the central Maldives.

According to a remand order by the Criminal Court on Thursday, he is suspected of smuggling drugs into the country and has been remanded in custody for 30 days.

During the remand hearing, the Police presented evidence they said substantiates the allegations, including Customs declaration forms, intelligence reports, statements from arresting officers and witnesses, and crime scene officer reports. The court order also stated that the suspect's urine analysis tested positive for cannabis.

Court records further indicate that the suspect has a prior history of arrests and detention.

The court order also stated that additional narcotics were recovered during searches of locations associated with the suspect. Police informed the court that the seized substances are linked to the individual and alleged that he acted in collaboration with others to facilitate their importation.

The defense argued that, in light of the suspect's lifelong diagnosis of autism and ongoing medical treatment, a formal psychological assessment is necessary to determine his current mental condition.

In response, the court instructed police to review the suspect's medical records and provide the necessary assistance to facilitate a psychological evaluation as part of the ongoing investigation.

Drug trafficking and substance abuse continue to rank among the Maldives' most pressing social challenges. Despite numerous initiatives introduced by successive governments to combat the issue, a comprehensive and lasting solution has yet to be achieved.
