Maldives Customs Service has seized drugs worth more than MVR 2.7 million smuggled into the country by air.

Customs said the items were intercepted on June 29 during checks at Velana International Airport (VIA). The seized substances weighed over 3.5 kilograms, including 740 grams of cannabis and 2,796 grams of hashish oil.

The service said the street value of the items is estimated at over MVR 2.7 million.

Customs also announced on Thursday that it had seized another consignment of drugs, valued at more than MVR 5 million, smuggled into Maldives through the post. The items were intercepted on June 18 and identified as synthetic cathinone, according to Customs.

The agency has not released further details in either case. It remains unclear from which countries the items were imported or whether any arrests have been made.
