Rainy weather forecasted for northern and southern Maldives

Maldives Meteorological Service (Met Office) has forecasted scattered rain and thunderstorms across the northern and southern atolls on Friday.

According to the latest weather advisory, rainfall is expected to continue across the northern and southern regions until 18:00pm this evening, with thunderstorms likely in some islands. The central atolls are also forecast to receive intermittent showers during the same period.

Winds are expected to vary across the country, with southwesterly to westerly winds forecast for the southern atolls, while the rest of the country is expected to experience westerly to northwesterly winds at speeds ranging from eight to 18 miles per hour. Gusts could reach up to 35 miles per hour during showers.

Sea conditions are generally expected to remain moderate, although rough seas are likely during gusts. Wave heights are forecast to range between three and six feet.

Rainfall measurements recorded over the past 24 hours show that Gaafu Dhaalu Atoll saw the highest levels of precipitation. Between 08:00am on Thursday and 08:00am on Friday, GDh. Kaadedhdhoo recorded the highest rainfall at 20.4 millimeters, followed by GDh. Thinadhoo with 16.7 millimeters and Fuvahmulah City with 10.5 millimeters.

Lh. Olhuvelifushi recorded 9.7 millimeters of rain, followed by GA. Kooddoo with 7.5 millimeters, and ADh. Maamigili with 6.5 millimeters.

Additional rainfall data showed that M. Muli recorded 3.5 millimeters, Addu City’s Hithadhoo 3.3 millimeters, and Sh. Funadhoo 2.4 millimeters. Hulhumalé recorded 2.2 millimeters of rainfall, while B. Goidhoo, K. Dhiffushi, and G.Dh. Faresmaathodaa each recorded 2.0 mm. The lowest rainfall was recorded in N. Maafaru and B. Dharavandhoo, with both locations seeing 1.0 millimeters of rain.
