The Criminal Court has sentenced a Maldivian woman, her partner, and a third accomplice to prison after finding them guilty of murdering the woman's newborn grandchild.
The case relates to the killing of a newborn infant in 2019.
Under the verdict delivered in closed court proceedings, all three individuals prosecuted by the state were sentenced to prison. According to available information, each of the defendants admitted to the offence and entered into plea agreements with the state.
Court findings show that the infant’s grandmother played a central role in the murder. She was assisted by her partner and the partner of the infant’s mother.
The mother of the deceased infant was reportedly under the age of 18 at the time of the incident.
Authorities allege that the third individual convicted in the case was the biological father of the child. He has also been sentenced to prison.
The incident took place in 2019 on an island in a central Maldivian atoll. The Criminal Court issued its verdict in the case last Thursday.
