Two convictions issued against Ali Shaahil of Finifenmaage, F. Nilandhoo, the prime suspect in the brutal murder of Shiaau Mohamed Saeed, have been appealed once again at the High Court.
Shaahil, who is charged in connection with Shiaau’s killing, was previously convicted on two counts and sentenced to three years in prison. According to the High Court registry, he filed appeals for both cases last week. The court has not yet made a decision on whether the appeals will proceed.
Shiaau was found decapitated and severely mutilated inside an apartment on the ninth floor of H. Sheereen Villa in Male' City on August 6, 2022, in what remains one of the most gruesome crimes ever recorded in the Maldives.
The nature of several charges raised against Shaahil has been kept confidential, and multiple counts remain pending at the Criminal Court.
The Criminal Court ordered Shaahil to remain in custody on August 7, 2022, the day after the murder.
Police previously stated that the post‑mortem findings showed Shiaau suffered severe injuries after death, and that the evidence indicated she died from wounds inflicted by Shaahil.
