President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s actions are creating a revolution, and the MDP will stand with the people, opposition MDP Chairman and former President Mohamed Nasheed said on Thursday evening.

Speaking at the protest ‘Vazeefa Buraasfathi’, organised to call out the dismissal of several employees from state‑owned companies, Nasheed accused the government of taking unjust action against MDP supporters. He said the MDP was formed to protect the rights of the people.

He said the party’s purpose is to uplift the people, and that its work is rooted in strengthening citizens’ rights.

Noting that the Constitution guarantees the protection of workers’ rights, Nasheed said Maldivians secured these rights only after many years of struggle.

He reiterated his earlier statement that he intends to change the current government.

He added that the party will continue to raise its voice for those being dismissed without due process, and pledged to do whatever is necessary to protect them.

“President Muizzu must understand that he is creating a revolution. The Maldivian people will rise for this revolution. They will continue to fulfil every obligation required to defend their rights,” Nasheed said.

The protest was attended by senior MDP officials and a large crowd.

Speaking at the rally, MDP President Abdullah Shahid said the party will not remain silent when the government violates the right to work.

He said MDP members will not back down in the face of government pressure, and that the party is prepared to challenge and defeat the administration.

He added that the government cannot win public support by dismissing and impoverishing citizens.

“What we are seeing now is a government being checkmated by a pawn. And we intend to keep pressing forward,” Shahid said.

Shahid also pledged that the jobs of all those dismissed under the current administration would be restored under an MDP government.
