The ruling PNC is with President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, the party’s Chairman and Parliament Speaker Abdul Raheem Abdullah has said in response to criticism from the opposition.

Former President and MDP Chairman Mohamed Nasheed has repeatedly claimed that PNC members have lost confidence in the President. Speaking on a Sangu TV programme on Wednesday, he pointed to a parliamentary spat earlier in the day and said the party was “unraveling” for all to see.

On Wednesday, Nasheed said the PNC was collapsing and that the President had lost his popularity. He argued that this was the time to remove President Muizzu from the PNC presidency.

In a post on X, Abdul Raheem said there was no need for talk aimed at dividing the PNC. He said the party would not be shaken by commentary and remained firmly aligned with the President.

“The PNC is the largest party in Maldives. The strongest party. The party of constructive thought. This party will always put the people and the country first,” he wrote.

Nasheed, who has launched a campaign called Bodu Badhalu, meaning “great change”, to push for the reforms he wants in the Maldives, has previously defended the President.

It is noteworthy that rumours circulated last year that the relationship between Abdul Raheem and the President, who played a leading role in bringing the government to power, had deteriorated. The speculation followed the sudden dismissal of Ibrahim Faisal, Abdul Raheem’s son, from his post as tourism minister in January last year.

Although Abdul Raheem later acknowledged that the relationship between the two leaders had strained, the PNC maintained that there was no tension between them.
