The government taxi service, Male' Taxi Line, was launched in Villimale' on Thursday.

Transport Minister Mohamed Saeed inaugurated the service at a ceremony held near the Villimale' Ferry Terminal.

The ceremony was also attended by MTCC Managing Director Ahmed Saudee and Villimale' MP Mohamed Ismail.

MTCC said it is proud to introduce an electric‑vehicle transport system in Villimale', describing it as a safe and reliable service for residents.

The government launched the taxi service in Male' on April 2, offering free rides for the first two weeks. Since then, demand for taxis in the capital has risen sharply, accompanied by complaints over inconsistency.

An application for the service was launched earlier this month. The Male' Taxi Line recorded more than 13,000 trips in its first month.

A fleet of 150 fully electric vehicles has been brought to the Maldives for the service, including compact cars suited for Male'’s narrow streets and larger vehicles for airport transfers.

Villimale', known for its quiet and pleasant environment, generally prohibits motor vehicles. However, in recent years, residents have raised concerns about the growing number of battery‑powered vehicles on the island.
