Former president Mohamed Nasheed has countered former president Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, stating that if Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) maintains its true spirit and momentum when facing the 2028 presidential election, securing victory without the other political parties’ backing would not be difficult.
Nasheed’s remarks follow Solih’s, who recently stated that winning a presidential election is not a feat that can be achieved by a single party alone.
Speaking at a campaign event for South Galolhu MP Meekail Ahmed Naseem in GDh. Thinadhoo on Saturday night, Solih pointed out that administrations elected under the “Green Constitution” so far, have come to power through coalitions. He noted that while MDP currently has approximately 60,000 members, an additional 91,000 votes would be required to win an election. Therefore, he argued that the party must welcome all those willing to support the Maldives’ development in line with MDP’s vision, cautioning that elections cannot be won through a limited circle.
Nasheed countered the remarks during campaign event at GDh. Faresmaathoda on Sunday, emphasizing it is a misconception that an election cannot be won without the support of the Adhaalath Party, the Jumhooree Party, or others.
"The real force behind all of this is this 'Yellow Army'—you. Sometimes we bring others close just to add the 'icing on the cake'," Nasheed remarked.
Nasheed maintained that if MDP continues its current campaign momentum, securing victory in 2028 would not be difficult. He further expressed confidence that MDP is the only party capable of achieving such a result.
In the lead-up to the MDP Chairperson election scheduled for Friday, both Nasheed and Meekail—who is backed by Solih—have been engaged in nationwide campaign activities. Both have emphasized that the internal election represents a crucial step in preparing the party for the upcoming presidential election.
