Aasandha, on Monday, said discussions are underway to expand its network of healthcare providers by adding 15 more hospitals in neighboring Sri Lanka.
Speaking with Sun, an Aasandha official stated that the company regularly receives requests from overseas healthcare institutions seeking inclusion under the scheme, adding that negotiations are initiated whenever such proposals are submitted in order to facilitate the provision of services.
According to the official, Aasandha has presently received submissions from 15 additional hospitals seeking Aasandha services at these facilities.
The official added that the institutions are presently undergoing a comprehensive evaluation process. Final approval will be granted only if the hospitals satisfy the required eligibility criteria.
The official cited the time-consuming stage of the process as reaching agreements with the hospitals on pricing structures for medical services.
"We are frequently approached by hospitals across both India and Sri Lanka. [The process of adding new providers or halting services] is a continuous one," the official added.
Sri Lanka remains one of the key destinations where Maldivians residing abroad can access healthcare services through the 'Meranaa' scheme. At present, Aasandha coverage is available at six major hospitals in the country: Asiri Surgical Hospital, Asiri Medical Hospital, Asiri Central Hospital, Durdans Hospital, Nawaloka Hospital Negombo, and Nawaloka Hospital Colombo.
While discussions on expanding Aasandha’s Sri Lankan network is ongoing, it is notable that Lanka Hospitals suspended Aasandha services earlier this year due to substantial outstanding payments.
Sri Lanka continues to be a primary destination for Maldivians seeking specialized medical treatment and is also home to a significant Maldivian expatriate population.
