Former President Mohamed Nasheed has claimed that President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu travelled to Singapore on an unofficial visit to meet Deputy Speaker of Parliament and Dhiggaru MP Ahmed Nazim, a claim the President’s Office has denied.

Nasheed said he had received information that President Muizzu had arrived in Singapore specifically to meet Nazim. However, he added that he does not believe Nazim intends to speak with the President.

A key factor fuelling speculation is that Nazim’s immediate whereabouts remain unclear. His position has been under intense contestation in recent days: the PNC parliamentary group moved to oust him after he reportedly refused to resign, and he was removed from the ruling party’s internal communication channels as well as several key parliamentary committees.

Meanwhile, some media reported that Nazim had travelled to Malaysia following the initiation of dismissal proceedings, even as Parliament’s General Committee has formally scheduled his defence. The uncertainty over where he is, and whom he may be meeting, has amplified the political intrigue surrounding Nasheed’s claim.

Senior Government Spokesperson Mohamed Hussain Shareef (Mundhu) told Sun that the President travelled to Singapore on holiday with his family, dismissing suggestions of a political meeting.

Nasheed had earlier alleged that 23 PNC MPs had switched parties with Nazim and were preparing to initiate a no‑confidence motion against President Muizzu.

The PNC parliamentary group decided on Wednesday to remove Nazim from his post as Deputy Speaker. The reason for the sudden loss of confidence has not been officially disclosed.

A senior PNC member previously told Sun that Nazim had been asked to resign but refused, prompting the move to impeach him.

The resolution to remove Nazim, signed by 73 MPs, accuses him of abusing his position to create sedition and disrupt the interests of Parliament. However, the document does not specify the actions that led to such allegations.

It further states that Nazim has become an obstacle to MPs in carrying out their constitutional duties.

“... because, in addition to abusing his office, creating strife, and repeatedly exhibiting bias towards a specific faction in a manner that undermines institutional harmony, the Majlis’ Deputy Speaker has been demonstrating prejudice and favoring a specific political ideology in all proceedings of the People’s Majlis, and has been inciting disruption of parliamentary order and neglecting his responsibilities,” the resolution reads.
