President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu said on Thursday that there is currently no responsible opposition in the Maldives, and that a responsible opposition would not oppose every policy of the government.

Speaking on PSM’s Nation Chat, the President said his administration is working to bring happiness, prosperity and good health to the people in every sense.

He said the government will continue with that effort.

The President said there is no obstacle to the opposition fulfilling its role, but noted that some opposition parties are making “nonsensical” statements because they do not consider the reality of the government’s policies. He urged the opposition to act responsibly.

“There is no responsible opposition in this country now. A responsible opposition will be the ones who will hold the government accountable, and if the government is doing something that benefits the people, if it is doing something that benefits the country, they will acknowledge it and cooperate with it,” he said.

Noting that the opposition must also be accountable for democracy to flourish, the President said the spirit of revenge and the pursuit of personal gain should not be a priority. He said the government can only be held accountable if the political process proceeds with a national vision.

The President reiterated that his priority is to serve the Maldives and its people equally, uphold the Constitution, maintain law and order, and give victory to Islam.

“Then the people should recognize that the attempts of some parties to disrupt the peace in this country are not responsible, it is not the rule of democracy, they are not sincere at all, and I am sure the people will accept it as such,” he said.
