The Maldives Association of Tourism Industry (MATI) has issued a strong appeal to all tourism operators, especially dive centres and diving service providers, to uphold the highest safety standards following the tragic incident involving five Italian tourists.

In a statement, MATI said it was “deeply saddened” by the incident, in which five tourists went missing while diving near Vaavu Atoll on Thursday. One body has been recovered, while four remain missing. MATI extended condolences to the families of all those affected.

The association also expressed profound sorrow over the death of Sergeant First Class Mohamed Mahudhy, who died on Saturday while participating in the MNDF search‑and‑rescue operation.

MATI praised the courageous and selfless efforts of MNDF teams working under difficult and fragile conditions, noting that their national service will “be remembered by everyone as a great service.”

However, MATI stressed that preventing such tragedies requires unwavering adherence to safety protocols. It urged all tourism operators, particularly dive centres, to maintain safety standards at the highest possible level.

MATI noted that the Maldives can only remain a safe and trusted destination if all industry players fully comply with safety regulations and operational guidelines.

The search for the missing tourists continued until Saturday before being temporarily suspended following Mahudhy’s death. Three experienced Finnish divers arrived in the Maldives on Sunday to assist in the search.

Mahudhy’s death has prompted widespread calls on social media for a special investigation into the circumstances of the incident.
