Protest heats up as three presidents join

Former presidents Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayyoom and Mohamed Nasheed join the protest calling for the release of imprisoned journalists on May 15, 2026.

The atmosphere at tonight’s protest intensified significantly as former presidents Mohamed Nasheed, Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom, and Ibrahim Mohamed Solih joined demonstrators on the streets.

Following their joint press conference—during which the three leaders sat together to express their opposition to the government—they proceeded directly to the protest site.

However, after taking part in the demonstration for a brief period, all three former presidents departed the scene.

The three former presidents resolved to work together in holding the government accountable on Friday night.

They stated that the key factors driving their cooperation include the administration’s restrictions on press freedom, the imprisonment of journalists, the declining standard of living among the public, and the economic downturn affecting the country.

The leaders also cited excessive government expenditure and the widespread prevalence of systemic malpractice within state institutions as major concerns.

During the meeting, all three former presidents pledged to take every necessary measure to ensure greater government accountability moving forward, emphasizing that they would make no concessions in their efforts. They further declared that, if necessary, they would not hesitate to take to the streets and lead public protests.
