Maldives Meteorological Service (Met Office) has urged the public to remain cautious as adverse weather conditions are expected to affect several parts of the country over the coming hours.
According to the latest weather update issued by the Met Office, widespread rainfall is forecast across large areas of the Maldives until 18:00pm this evening, with some islands likely to experience heavy rain and thunderstorms.
The country is currently experiencing the Southwest Monsoon, locally known as Hulhangu Monsoon, during which adverse weather conditions prevail.
During the past 24 hours, heavy rainfall was reported across multiple regions of the country, with Gan in southernmost Addu City recording the highest rainfall at 47.8mm.
Statistical data released by the Met Office showed that between 08:00am Sunday and 08:00 this morning, significant rainfall was recorded on several islands. Following Gan, the highest rainfall was observed in Sh. Funadhoo at 32.7mm. Meanwhile, Hithadhoo in Addu City recorded 29.2mm of rain, while Hulhumeedhoo registered 19.8mm.
Rainfall was also reported in several islands across the central and southern regions. In this regard, L. Kadhdhoo, recording 6.7mm of rain, AA. Thoddoo recorded 6.0mm of rain, GA. Gemanafushi recorded 5.2mm of rain, K. Dhiffushi recorded 2.7mm of rain, and Fuvahmulah City recorded 2.5mm of rain. The figures indicate that the southern atolls have been most affected by the ongoing spell of severe weather.
For the next 24 hours, the Met Office forecasts generally rough sea conditions, with winds expected from the west and northwest. Wind speeds in the southern atolls are anticipated to range between 15 and 25 mph, while other regions may experience winds between 13 and 23 mph. Gusts could intensify to as much as 40 mph during periods of heavy showers.
Wave heights are expected to range between four and seven feet. Authorities warned that such conditions may pose risks to small vessels and strongly advised seafarers to exercise heightened caution and prioritize safety measures.
Met Office has appealed to the public, particularly those traveling by sea, to remain updated on weather developments. Travelers have been advised to check the latest forecasts before commencing journeys and to ensure all necessary safety precautions are in place.
The public has also been advised to prepare for possible flooding caused by heavy rainfall and to secure loose items that may be displaced by strong winds. Met Office added that it continues to closely monitor weather patterns and urged the public to remain attentive to any warnings or alerts issued.
