The Elections Commission (EC) has issued a notice instructing all political parties to conduct their activities in line with the Criminal Court’s order prohibiting the publication or discussion of any content from the documentary Aisha.
The case concerns a documentary alleging adultery involving President Dr Mohamed Muizzu. The Criminal Court also issued an “order not to act in a pending case”, banning the circulation of the video and any direct or indirect reference to the allegations it contains.
The order applies to the public at large and prohibits publishing, broadcasting or sharing any part of the documentary, as well as making statements about the alleged victim or the case while proceedings are ongoing. The court also barred the release of documents submitted in the case, noting that such matters may be conducted behind closed doors under Article 42(c)(1) of the Constitution to uphold societal moral standards. Any breach may be treated as contempt of court.
In its notice, the EC reminded political parties that their rallies, speeches and online content must comply with the court’s restrictions and avoid any reference to the documentary or its claims.
Criminal charges have already been filed against Adhadhu CEO and Chief Editor Hussain Fiyaz Moosa and Managing Editor Hassan Mohamed in connection with the documentary. Both have been charged with qazf, and the court has ordered that no statements be made regarding the alleged victim or the case.
The EC said political parties must respect the court order while carrying out their political activities.
