Duo arrested from Male’ with over a kilo of drugs

Two people were arrested with over a kilo of drugs from Male’ City last week, as part of a police crackdown on drugs.

The duo – a Maldivian and a Bangladeshi – were arrested on Thursday in a joint operation by Counter-Narcotics Intelligence and Counter-Narcotics.

They were identified as:

• Zakir Hossain, 29, Bangladesh
• Mohamed Fauzan, 35, Edhuruge, GA. Vilingili

They are suspected of the use, possession and sale of narcotics.

The duo was taken to the Criminal Court on Friday for their remand hearing.

The court warrants for their remand show the drugs were found in a raid on the ground floor of a house in Henveiru where Zakir resides in.

During the raid, the police found 1.028 kilograms of drugs, as well as drug paraphernalia, including scales and packing equipment.

Meanwhile, the police believe Fauzan to be linked to the place whether the drugs were found.

Officers had opened a bag inside the room using keys in his possession.

The court found the evidence against both suspects to be adequate to substantiate the allegations against them and remanded them into police custody; Zakir for 15 days, and Fauzan for 10.

The court also instructed the police to check Zakir’s immigration status ahead of the next hearing.
