Trial resumes under new judge as key DNA analysis remains incomplete in Abdul Rahman case

The trial of 65‑year‑old Abdul Rahman Adam, who was brutally killed in AA. Maalhos, has resumed under a new judge.

Abdul Rahman, 65, Orchidmaage, AA. Maalhos, was rushed to the island health centre around 1:50am on July 13 after he was found bleeding in his bedroom. Police said he had suffered “serious injuries” while asleep in his home, and died a couple of hours later at the health centre. An autopsy confirmed he died from head injuries.

Three young men from Maalhos were arrested in connection with the case on August 21. They are:

  • Mohamed Wisam, 23, Lillyfehi, AA. Maalhos

  • Ahmed Faris, 28, Finivaage, AA. Maalhos

  • Ahmed Ashid, 28, Fiya, AA. Maalhos

Ashid has been charged with intentional murder using a dangerous weapon under the Prohibition of Intimidation and Possession of Dangerous Weapons and Sharp Objects Act. Wisam and Faris have been charged with participation in an act of intentional murder using a dangerous weapon under the same Act.

At Monday’s hearing, the new judge briefed the parties on the progress of the case. The prosecution has appealed the previous judge’s decision to restart proceedings from the preliminary stage.

Prosecutors allege the three accused entered Abdul Rahman’s home and struck him on the head while he was asleep. The defence has requested the DNA analysis related to the case, but the report is still pending.

The three accused are not known to have had any disputes with Abdul Rahman. His family previously said the men were friendly when they met on the island. A resident told Sun earlier that all three were responsible youths employed in government jobs. Wisam had been serving as a Youth Associate, a political appointment made by the President. Faris worked at the STELCO branch in Maalhos, while Ashid was employed by the Road Development Corporation (RDC).

It is understood that Ashid was in Maalhos at the time of the murder, though he was arrested in Male', where he resides. Sources said none of the three had prior criminal records. Islanders have also claimed Abdul Rahman was accused of witchcraft, but his family denies the allegation.
