The dredging work required for the airport in Sh. Milandhoo was completed on Monday, the Housing Ministry said.

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu visited Milandhoo on October 15 last year and inaugurated the airport project. At the time, he pledged to complete land dredging within eight months and to build the airport within two and a half years.

Deputy Housing Minister Mohamed Nashid said in a post on X on Monday that 25.90 hectares of land required for the airport has now been dredged. The project was contracted by Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) to Boskalis of the Netherlands.

Nashid said the work was completed ahead of schedule, fulfilling the President’s pledge. He said this demonstrated the government’s commitment to delivering its promises to the public at a fast pace.

The President has previously said an airport is essential for Milandhoo. He noted at the time that the island’s port would need to be relocated to facilitate the airport’s construction.

The government has pledged to ensure that every island is within 30 minutes of an airport.
