President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu states over 23,000 jobs have been created across the public and private sectors during his administration’s term of over two years.

In a message to the nation marking International Workers’ Day (Labor Day), the President outlined his government’s strategic policies to strengthen the national workforce, highlighting a particular focus on vocational education. He pointed out the establishment of the Maldives’ first vocational high school as part of these efforts.

He further stated that the government has introduced a range of training programs in key sectors of national development, alongside expanding access to grants and concessional loans to support the growth of skills and talent.

“The government maintains a comprehensive and equitable policy to safeguard the rights of both local and expatriate workers across all sectors, while advancing the labour industry,” the President said.

Additionally, he pointed to early progress in securing international market access for Maldivian products through partnerships with major e-commerce platforms. He also emphasized that measures have been strengthened to ensure expatriate workers operate within the legal framework.

Key points highlighted in the address include:

  • Targeted initiatives to expand employment opportunities for persons with disabilities
  • Legislative changes to allow individuals to remain in the workforce beyond the age of 65
  • Efforts to position the administration as one that engages directly with workers to address their concerns
  • Measures taken to resolve long-standing issues affecting workers across sectors and levels
  • The creation of over 23,000 jobs across public and private sectors over the past two years

“I urge all Maldivian citizens to support the successful and prompt implementation of these critical measures aimed at expanding employment and professional opportunities,” the President said.

He concluded by calling on all capable citizens to actively participate in the workforce.

Despite the reported job creation figures, the administration has faced criticism over the number of political appointees. Although the President had initially pledged to limit such appointments to 700, critics allege that the figure extends beyond thousands.

Following the results of recent elections, the administration has initiated major structural reforms, including a cabinet reshuffle and broader efforts to streamline government operations.

Furthermore, on April 29th, the President announced plans to dismiss a significant number of political appointees based on performance evaluations, though the exact number of those to be removed has not been disclosed.
