(L-R) Former Local Government Minister Adam Shareef Umar, former Environment Minister Thoriq Ibrahim and former Attorney General Fathimath Dhiyana Saeed.
Former Attorney General Fathimath Dhiyana Saeed, former Environment Minister Thoriq Ibrahim and former Local Government Minister Adam Shareef Umar have been appointed to the Foreign Ministry.
The three have been appointed as Ambassadors at Large. Adam Shareef has been appointed at ministerial rank.
Thoriq and Adam Shareef were part of President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s first cabinet of 22 ministers. Thoriq was initially appointed as Environment Minister, but on 1 February last year, the President merged the ministry with the Tourism Ministry.
Since then, 10 ministers, including Adam Shareef and Thoriq, resigned suddenly on the 14th of this month. The President’s Office said the ministers resigned to allow the President to bring positive changes to run the government in line with the people’s wishes, 'pulse' as the President put it.
Among the newly appointed, Dhiyana served as Attorney General from 12 November 2008 to 19 May 2009. She also served as Gender Minister from 7 May 2012 to 19 November 2012.
Last year, she publicly criticised the government over the suspension and dismissal of several Supreme Court judges. The Judicial Service Commission (JSC) had launched an investigation into the case involving former judge Dr. Azmiralda Zahir.
On 26 February last year, Azmiralda and two other judges were suspended after the Supreme Court accepted a case challenging the constitutional amendment passed by Parliament to remove MPs who switch parties.
At the time, Dhiyana accused the government of influencing the Supreme Court. She also criticised the Supreme Court for annulling the amendment that strips MPs of their seats if they change their party.
To note; Dhiyana’s ex‑husband and former MP Abdulla Jabir signed up for the ruling PNC on Thursday.
