Opposition South Galolhu candidate Meekail Ahmed Naseem has called for action against MDP Deputy Chairperson Ibrahim Waheed (Iburey), alleging that he is actively participating in former president Mohamed Nasheed’s campaign for the post of Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) Chairperson.

In a letter sent to MDP Chairman Abdul Ghafoor Moosa (Gapo), Meekail said he had received complaints that Iburey was “practically involved” in Nasheed’s campaign activities. He urged that Iburey step aside for the duration of the campaign.

“I sincerely request you to proceed in this matter in accordance with the party's rules and procedures,” Meekail wrote.

He said he is contesting for the chairmanship to prevent such incidents from recurring within the party.

Meekail noted that the Deputy Chairperson (Administration) is responsible for increasing party membership and overseeing campaign activities. He argued that supporting a particular candidate would compromise the integrity of the election and give an unfair advantage to some candidates over others. His letter concluded by requesting the party to investigate the matter promptly and take action in line with party regulations.

Iburey was dismissed earlier this month for allegedly failing to cooperate with Chairman Gapo, but he was recently reinstated in what party officials described as an internal compromise. Legal Director Ahmed Mauroof was reinstated alongside him.

Following their dismissal, the faction aligned with Nasheed and former chairman Fayyaz Ismail submitted a no‑confidence motion against Gapo. However, the motion was withdrawn after Nasheed was granted a seat in the National Assembly and a five‑member committee was formed to oversee party operations.
