Some of the members of President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s cabinet who resigned on Tuesday are reportedly being reappointed to head different ministries.
Half of President Muizzu’s 20-member cabinet resigned on Tuesday, including Foreign Minister Dr. Abdulla Khaleel, Defense Minister Mohamed Ghassan Maumoon, Health Minister Abdulla Nazim Ibrahim, Tourism and Environment Minister Ibrahim Thoriq and heads of other key ministries.
Sun has learnt that negotiations are underway to have some of these ministers reappointed to lead different ministries. A credible source reported to Sun that it is likely that Ghassan will be reappointed as the foreign minister.
Some sources also report a high likelihood of some of the candidates from the ruling People’s National Congress (PNC) who unsuccessfully contested the recent local council elections getting appointed to the cabinet.
Negotiations are also reportedly underway to reappoint other ministers who resigned to different ministries.
Sources also report that it is likely President Muizzu may combine some of the ministries in order to downsize the cabinet.
The cabinet shakeup comes in the wake of a major defeat for the ruling PNC in the recent local council elections and referendum, which saw the main opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) sweep a majority of seats in local councils.
The days that followed have seen a series of resignations and dismissals rock the top management of state-owned enterprises, as well as the President’s Office, and now the cabinet itself.
The President’s Office stated on Tuesday that the ministers resigned “to allow room for the president to make the positive changes he wishes to make in order to run the government in line with the will of the people.”
