Dr. Ashraf Abdul Raheem, the Executive Chairman of Sun Siyam Media and former president of the Dhivehi Bahuge Academy, has emphasized that the Dhivehi language constitutes a fundamental pillar of Maldivian national identity, urging the public to use proper Dhivehi in all forms of communication.

Dr. Ashraf made these remarks during a special programme broadcast on SSTV in commemoration of this year’s Dhivehi Language Day.

Observed annually on April 14, Dhivehi Language Day this year carries the slogan: "Let’s speak proper Dhivehi to revive national identity," a theme selected by the Dhivehi Bahuge Academy.

A distinguished linguist, Dr. Ashraf noted that the chosen slogan is both timely and highly relevant within the current social context of the Maldives.

Defining national identity as "national character," he explained that it is founded upon four principal pillars: the holy religion of Islam, Maldivian culture and traditions, the Dhivehi language, and national independence. He stressed that national identity is rendered incomplete if any of these elements are undermined.

"One of the strongest pillars of any nation is its own unique mother tongue. Similarly, our proud Dhivehi language is one of the most vital foundations of Maldivian national identity," Dr. Ashraf stated.

He further described the Dhivehi language as a valuable and enduring heritage passed down from previous generations.

During the SSTV program "Bodu Ehenas Kuda’, Dr. Ashraf also drew attention to concerning trends in contemporary language usage. He specifically highlighted common errors observed in online news articles and everyday communication, noting that such inaccuracies often distort original meanings and lead to misunderstandings.

Dr. Ashraf concluded by reminding the public that the use of proper Dhivehi is the most effective means of safeguarding both individual and national identity. He cautioned that the loss of the language would result in the erosion of one of the nation’s most significant defining elements.
