A summary hearing in the murder trial of Ali Shaahil, charged with killing and dismembering 22‑year‑old musician Shiaau Mohamed Saeed, is scheduled to take place on Tuesday at the Criminal Court.
Shiaau was found brutally killed inside an apartment on the ninth floor of H. Sheereen Villa on August 6, 2022. Shaahil, of Finifenmaage, F. Nilandhoo, is charged with intentional homicide along with several additional offences, some of which the prosecution has kept confidential.
The entire trial has been conducted behind closed doors, with no public access to hearings. Tuesday’s session will hear the summary statements, the final arguments presented by both sides before the trial concludes.
Under Section 151 of the Code of Criminal Procedure, summary statements are filed after all evidence has been taken. The prosecution delivers its statement first, followed by the defence. These statements outline how the evidence supports, or fails to support, the charges, and address the legal principles relevant to the case.
Shaahil has remained in custody since August 7, 2022, when the Criminal Court ordered him held pending trial.
Police previously stated that the post‑mortem report showed Shiaau suffered severe injuries and that the findings indicated she died from injuries inflicted by Shaahil.
The Criminal Court has earlier said it expects to issue a verdict later this month.
