The Maldives Food and Drug Authority (MFDA) has warned that action will be taken against individuals who import or sell weight‑loss, muscle‑building, skin‑enhancement and libido‑related medications without the required permits.

In a notice published in the government gazette last Thursday, the MFDA said such products, including medicines and supplements marketed under various names, are being brought into the country without authorisation and sold both online and in some public shops. The authority also noted that some people are using these products without a doctor’s prescription.

The MFDA said drugs sold without permits have not been certified by the authority for safety or quality, and their use could pose serious risks to public health. Potential consequences include heart attacks, strokes and sudden death, the authority cautioned.

According to the MFDA, these products may only be sold in licensed pharmacies with the necessary approvals. The authority will remove unauthorised products from the market and take action against those who import, sell or advertise them without permission.

“Therefore, it is hereby notified that action will be taken against those who import, sell and advertise medicines without the permission of this Authority under the Medicines Regulation (No. 2014/R‑46) and the Health Services Act (No. 2015/29),” the notice stated.

The MFDA advised the public to contact its hotline for further information.
