(L-R) MDP Legal Director Ahmed Mauroof and MDP Vice‑Chairman Ibrahim Waheed (Iburey).
The opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has reinstated Deputy Chairperson Ibrahim Waheed (Iburey) and the party’s legal director Ahmed Mauroof, days after both were abruptly dismissed.
The decision was made during a closed‑door meeting of the MDP National Assembly held on Saturday evening. In a message sent to the Assembly’s WhatsApp group after the meeting, Interim Chairperson Abdul Ghafoor Moosa (Gapo) said the letters issued to Iburey and Mauroof had been withdrawn.
Iburey was dismissed on Tuesday under Article 70 of the party’s constitution, though he publicly stated he did not accept the decision. The dispute emerged amid internal tensions after former President Mohamed Nasheed was not given the opportunity to speak at the recent celebratory rally following the local council elections victory.
Former Chairperson Fayyaz Ismail announced that the no‑confidence motion submitted against Ghafoor had also been withdrawn.
According to party members, the decisions followed discussions and an agreement to involve former President Mohamed Nasheed in the party’s leadership processes. Many see the move as an effort to restore unity and revive the party’s internal momentum.
Saturday evening’s meeting, attended by several senior leaders, is expected to pave the way for a more permanent resolution to the administrative challenges facing the MDP.
