MDP National Assembly appoints Nasheed, Solih and senior leaders to interim committee to guide party operations

The main opposition party, the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), has approved the formation of a special interim committee to advise on the running of the party.

Sun has learned that the decision was made during a closed‑door meeting of the MDP National Assembly held on Saturday evening. The committee will advise Interim Chairperson Abdul Ghafoor Moosa (Gapo) until a permanent chairperson is elected.

The committee comprises:

  • Former President Mohamed Nasheed  
  • Former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih  
  • Interim Chairperson Abdul Ghafoor Moosa (Gapo)  
  • Party President Abdulla Shahid  
  • Parliamentary Group Leader Ibrahim Nazil  
  • Former Chairperson Fayyaz Ismail  

The resolution to form the committee was proposed by Ghafoor and seconded by Vaikaradhoo MP Hussain Ziyadh (Fittey).

Saturday evening’s meeting was brief, concluding in under 10 minutes with no debate before the vote. With this decision, significant changes are expected in the MDP’s internal management.
