Firefighters put out blaze at trash pile near FDC towers after six-hour battle

Firefighters responded to a blaze near the ‘Gedhoruveriya’ flats in Hulhumale’ Phase II on early Saturday, after a large pile of waste near the towers caught on fire.

 The fire, which originated from a pile of waste near the Dhoadhi 11 tower, was reported to the Maldives National Defense Force (MNDF) at around 02:21 am.

The MNDF said that firefighters from the Hulhumale’ Fire Station were immediately deployed to respond to the fire.

According to the MNDF, the firefighters were able to completely put out the fire at around 08:18 am.

There were no reports of any injuries.

People began moving into the ‘Gedhoruveriya’ flats, developed by the Fahi Dhiriulhun Corporation (FDC), in September last year. The towers were plagued by waste dumping as people began to move in, prompting the FDC to fine several tenants.
