Permanent Representative of Maldives with the United Nations, Dr Salma Rasheed delivers a statement during the General Debate in Geneva, March 25, 2026: Salma's has been reinstated following dismissal two days ago.
Dr. Salma Rasheed, the Maldives’ Permanent Representative to Geneva, who is the sister of MP Asma Rasheed who was dismissed from her post two days ago in the wake of strained ties between Asma and President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s administration, was reinstated on Wednesday.
Salma was dismissed alongside Asma’s son, Mohamed Hussain Shareef (Mundhu) who was serving as Maldives’ Ambassador to the UAE on Monday.
A close acquaintance of Salma on Sun on Wednesday that the cancellation of the dismissal notice previously issued to her, a seasoned professional in the field of diplomacy, has been informed to her.
Despite multiple attempts to obtain an official comment regarding this decision, the relevant authorities at the President’s Office and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs have not responded to calls or messages. Generally, various administrations have been proactive in announcing the appointment or dismissal of individuals holding such significant positions.
On the day of the initial report, a family member informed Sun that Asma Rasheed’s daughter, Aminath Hussain Shareef, who serves as a State Minister at the Ministry of Fisheries and Ocean Resources, had also been dismissed. However, it has since been confirmed that she remains in her position.
Sun can confirm that dismissal of these officials were linked to an audio recording that recently circulated on social media. In the recording, two individuals, including MP Asma Rasheed, were heard expressing strong criticism of the current administration.
Notably, these developments come in the aftermath of the significant defeat suffered by the ruling PNC in last Saturday’s local council by-elections and the public referendum.
