The President’s Office, on Saturday, has declared Sunday and Monday as public holidays in conjunction with the three elections taking place across the nation today.

The President’s Office explained that the decision was made because many government employees were involved in election-related duties today, leading the Elections Commission (EC) to request a government closure for the following two days.

According to the EC, as cited by the President’s Office, the Commission will continue handling important election-related tasks through Monday.

Maldivians voted on Saturday in the local council elections, the women’s development committee (WDC) elections, as well as a referendum on merging the presidential and parliamentary elections.

Although most eligible voters turned out to vote, many experienced significant challenges due to the intense heat currently affecting the Maldives.
