Three judges of the High Court have applied for the vacant position of Chief Justice of the court.
Former High Court judge Abdul Rauf Ibrahim, along with sitting judges Abdullah Jameel Moosa and Mohamed Shaneez Abdullah, submitted their nominations before the application deadline on March 31. Although the Judicial Service Commission (JSC) has not yet made an official announcement, it has been confirmed that these three judges are in the running.
The post became vacant after former Chief Justice Hussain Shaheed was appointed as the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court.
Under the Courts of Maldives Act, the Chief Justice of the High Court serves as the administrative head of the court. The responsibilities include overseeing all administrative affairs, forming benches to hear cases, and assigning cases to judges.
The Chief Justice also represents the High Court in dealings with other state institutions, ensures the enforcement of the court’s orders and judgments, presides over the court, and implements its internal rules of procedure.
