India has approved a record volume of essential commodities for export to Maldives for the 2026–27 period, the Indian High Commission announced Wednesday.

In a statement, the High Commission said the Indian government has authorised the export of key food items and construction materials, including eggs, potatoes, onions, rice, wheat flour, sugar, lentils, stone aggregate and river sand. The approvals were granted under a long‑standing bilateral mechanism through which Maldives submits its annual requirements.

According to the High Commission, the quantities approved for 2026–27 are the highest since the arrangement was established in 1981.

The statement highlighted that the rice quota has been increased by 77 percent compared to the previous year. It also noted that river sand and stone aggregate remain critical for Maldives’ construction sector.

As in previous years, India has exempted these exports from any existing or future restrictions throughout the financial year, reaffirming its commitment to supporting Maldives’ development under its ‘Neighbourhood First’ policy.

India remains one of Maldives’ closest partners and a consistent provider of assistance across multiple sectors.
