Ageel, suspect in FAM corruption, extradited to Maldives and remanded pending trial’s end

Former Finance Head of FAM, Mohamed Ageel: Ageel gas been extradited to Maldives and remanded in custody pending the outcome of his trial.

Mohamed Ageel, Football Association of Maldives (FAM)’s former finance chief, whom the Police have been ordered to present before the court for the trial of Bassam Adeel Jaleel, the Association’s disgraced former president, has been extradited to the Maldives following his arrest in Thailand and remanded in custody pending the trial’s end.

The Criminal Court has ordered the Maldives Police Service to produce Adeel in custody to testify as a witness in Bassam’s trial. Notably, Ageel has also been charged with aiding in money laundering in connection with the case.

The Police told Sun that Ageel was extradited to the Maldives on February 21 and presented before the Criminal Court the following day in accordance with a court order issued to the authority. During the hearing, he was remanded in custody pending the outcome of his trial at the request of the Prosecutor General’s Office.

Ageel was arrested in Thailand on January 30th over a visa violation.

Ageel has also previously testified against Bassam in one of the many cases against him. In this regard, Ageel testified that Bassam received a monthly allowance of USD 5,000.

Notably, is currently serving a 32-year prison sentence in connection with two charges of money laundering and two charges of corruption in two separate cases over the embezzlement of FAM funds.

The ongoing case against Bassam stems from the allegation that they embezzled USD 1.2 million (MVR 18 million) in funds provided by the Federation Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) to FAM.
